Do you think meanings matter?

I always check the meaning of a name I like but it doesn't really influence meif its a dumb meaning. Like my name means by the lindon trees and things about lakes (its always different) I think its nice when the name means something nice, but it doesnt influence my decision either.

Do Baby Name meanings influence your decision?

What do some of your favorite names mean?Do you think meanings matter?
No, i always like to look at them, but they never really influence my decisions! I've always liked Cameron for a boy and its meaning is crooked nose!

Though if i ever had a child named Cameron, don't you think it would be a funny little story to tell?

= )
I never really paid much attention to meaning when we were going through names. I just picked names that sounded nice and would age well. If I was 50, would I be comfortable having this as my proper name? If I was applying for the CEO position, how would this name look on a resume?

Yes, some of the horrible names might help you get into college... your admissions essay can be about how horrible your life was because your mother named you Booberella, but no one will hire Booberella for any job other then stripper.Do you think meanings matter?
well the meanings of the names in other languages do matter.

learn a lesson from little Suri Cruise whose name means robber in japanese.

i had a friend whose name meant sperm in chinese. why do parents do that ! :)Do you think meanings matter?
I don't really think name meanings matter too much.

My daughter's name is Zoe Katina, which means Pure and Life. And I like that.

My son's name is Parker Quinn, which means Park-keeper and descendant of Conn, and that's..just kind of weird. But I like the names.
I don't think it matters loads but if it's a really nasty meaning then it might be wise to avoid it to avoid later ribbing. And choosing a name with a nice meaning is quite sweet because you can tell your child that you chose it especially for the nice meaning. Same goes for naming after relatives/friends/certain things.
Meanings don't affect my name choices at all, so much so that I like names like Heathen and Hayden (which mean unholy or barbaric, although I'm not religious anyway) and others which are similar.

I don't usually look at name meanings, anyway.

I don't think they would. Unless its something obvious that is an actual word in a well known language. LIke Isla for island and Cara means face. My name has a stupid meaning too.
Not at all

It took eight months for my husband and I to both love a first name that when with our last

The meaning did not matter at all

If you have a last name that goes with anything, than the meaning of the name could matter

Sometimes meanings influence me...like if they're BAD ones that I wouldn't want in my child's name.

I'm currently struggling with Natalee- that was to be my daughter's middle name 'cause I love it and it goes perfectly with the first name we chose...but it's (obviously) a form of Natalie, which means born on Christmas Day- my baby's not due 'till May 1st- couldn't hardly GET much further from Christmas. I'm struggling with whether or not I want to still use the name or not.
Yes, meanings matter in general. Less so if the name comes from a complex combination of obscure terms in a dead language, I suppose, but if it translates directly to something offensive or ridiculous in a living language, it certainly matters.

Saying it doesn't matter is like saying that English is the only language that matters, or the only language where meanings matter -- so we'll use whatever sounds we like, from any language that sounds nice, but we'll ignore the meanings as if other languages are just pretty things to play around with. There's definitely an arrogance in that viewpoint, imo.
i suppose its how you look at it, i mean if you want the name to mean something you want it to be a nice meaning ,but if your not bothered and just really like the name then it doesnt matter.

eg my name jennifer means fair in cornish. nothing special but my dad liked the name!

my daughters name is leah which is hebrew for wild gazelle and something else, it is a bible name too and in the bible leah was an important charecter , so to me it means strength and love because of her story in the bible , now im not particulary religious or anything just liked the name! her middle name is neve which is irish and italian. its gaelic for radience/beautifull and in italian it means snow. i guess at the end of the day if you like the name and its something your child can grow up with then it makes no difference what it means.
They are not important but sometimes its nice if you find a name and it has a nice meaning xx
